Every young person under the age of eighteen who comes into the Wakefield district Court arena will have contact with the Court and Community Supervision Team (C&CST). For some this will be fleeting for others it may be considerably longer.
Our main aim is the overall aim of the Youth Offending Team to prevent offending and re-offending by the young people of our district.
We are a multi-agency team consisting of Social Workers Probation Officers, Youth Offending Team Officers and a specialist post dealing with bail supervision. We also have a dedicated team who work exclusively within the courts.
The Court Team assist Judges and Magistrates to make the best decisions when sentencing young people that is in the best interests of the general public and the young person concerned.
When a young person receives a community penalty and has to work with us, the first thing we do is make an assessment of what are the reasons behind their offending and then work on those reasons. We do not work just with the young person we also involve the parents, carers and even extended family. The work can be challenging for young people, as often beliefs that they have are the ones that need changing if they are to stop offending.
We also try to get the young person to think about how the victims of crime feel about what has happened to them. This can often have the biggest impact on the young people we work with.
